1 Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? 2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. 4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”
James 4:1-6 | NKJV
16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.
James 3:16 | NKJV
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
1 Timothy 6:10 | NKJV
How does God view winning? What’s a win to Him? The highest score in a sports event? The one who out talks the other in an argument? The one whose name is call for some prize?
Winning is not always getting your way or getting more.
“You’re my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh oh…” “All of Me” John Legend
We win when we lose ourselves.
We win when we live unselfishly.
We win when we are guided by God.
Lessons from the text:
1 – We create what we cultivate.
What’s growing in you? There’s no need for you to answer that question. We’ll see it in time. Good and evil are manifestations of a thought. An undisciplined mind leads to an undisciplined life. Chaos and confusion are fruit of an untrained mind. Your mind will work for you or against you. If our minds are governed by God our lives will be good. If our minds are governed by this world system we will have woe.
2 – This world’s system is filled with woe.
3 – Grace grants us access to the good life.
Humility is the signal for grace. Selfishness stops grace. Humility releases it!
What is humility? Humility is thinking according to your measure of faith.
3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
Romans 12:3 | NKJV
